These tips can help Blue Jackets fans navigate the Arena District during home games
With the Blue Jackets back home at Nationwide Arena for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Thursday, here are some tips on how best to enjoy an outing to the Arena District.
Let’s face it — only the most diehard fans (or those with clairvoyant powers) really expected to see Columbus Blue Jackets hockey this late in April.
And doubters would be forgiven, partly because the Blue Jackets have never actually played hockey this late in April. Plus, the Jackets were massive underdogs in their first-round matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
After completing an improbable sweep — the franchise’s first NHL playoff-series victory in 18 seasons — the Jackets have given their fans at least one more series to enjoy, this time against the Boston Bruins. With the team back home at Nationwide Arena for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Thursday, here are some tips on how best to enjoy an outing to the Arena District.
1. Best places to park: Plenty of parking garages and surface lots surround Nationwide Arena. For more information, visit www.arenadistrictparking.com. But to avoid the hefty bump in game-time parking prices, the savvy traveler may consider public transportation. The Central Ohio Transit Authority has several $2 lines — 1, 2, 2L, 5, 6, 8, 10 and CMAX — to get fans to Nationwide Arena and back home afterward. For those parking their cars away from the arena, CBUS — the free circulator covering the Arena District, Short North, Brewery District, Downtown and German Village — has extended hours through midnight during home playoff games. Visit www.cota.com or download the Transit app to plan your trip.
2. Best happy hours: Thirsty folks looking for a cold-and-frosty before the game might consider local taprooms serving up their craft brews. Between 3 and 7 p.m. on game days, all drafts at Wolf’s Ridge Brewing (215 N. 4th St.) are $2 off. Another special offered by the taproom allows guests to enjoy one happy-hour draft and a specified meal for $12. The happy hour at Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus (161 N. High St.) features $2 off draft beer, mixed drinks and all appetizers from 3 to 6 p.m. Prefer wine? The taproom offers happy-hour glasses of both red and white for $3. At Barley’s Brewing Company (467 N. High St.), guests can enjoy $4 pints from 3 to 7 p.m. The happy hour also includes a separate appetizer menu that features the famous sauerkraut balls, buffalo chicken dip, shrimp skewers and truffle fries. Tuesday night features $8 burgers from 3 to 11 p.m.
3. Best after-party: There’s just no denying it: The R Bar is the definitive Columbus Blue Jackets bar. After all, it bills itself as “the best place to watch hockey in Columbus.” Located at 413 N. Front St., just northeast of the arena, there are few better places for fans to celebrate a win or mourn a defeat. Be warned: the place fills up quickly on game days.
4. Best places to get gear: If you are going to the game, you have to dress the part. For Blue Jackets apparel, Homage, Fox Sports Ohio Blue Line at the Mall at Tuttle Crossing and Lamp Apparel all have you covered. Literally. And here’s a pro tip: Beat the lines at the merchandise stands in Nationwide by ordering gear online (www.thebluelineonline.com) and picking it up at the arena. Since it’s already paid for, just head straight to the counter.
5. Best viewing party for those without tickets: You don’t need tickets to enjoy a playoff atmosphere in the Arena District. Plaza Party events at the arena begin three hours before the puck drops and include beer trucks, food, live music, games and roaming entertainers. Once the game starts, you and your hundreds of new friends don’t have to leave to watch it — two giant screens will broadcast the action.
6. One more thing: Don’t let the name fool you; Boston’s Pizza Restaurant & Sports Bar (191 W. Nationwide Blvd.) will welcome Jackets fans. Those conflicted about eating at a place whose name bears the city of the Blue Jackets’ opponent need not worry. The chain covered the B with an “X,” similar to the way Ohio State Buckeyes fans cover every letter M when it comes time to face that team up north. And according to the company’s website, the company is based in Dallas; the closest Boston’s to Boston is in Washington, D.C., more than 400 miles away.

Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Apartment
In Columbus, springtime is arguably the best time of year. The sun stays out longer, the weather starts to warm up, the flowers and trees are in bloom and people are all-around in better moods.
There is really nothing to complain about during this beautiful season–or is there? Unfortunately, when springtime comes around, it usually comes with the task we all dread: spring cleaning our apartments.
Although this can be a grueling, not-so-fun activity, it doesn’t have to be as hard as it may seem. Here are some helpful tips to make your apartment spring-cleaning process easier and a little more enjoyable.
How to Start
For starters, in order to feel organized and ready to tackle this task, you should always come up with a plan for what needs to be done in each room. You’ll feel confident and get more things done when you create a checklist to consult.
The first step for a successful spring-cleaning day is start with decluttering. Donate, toss or recycle appropriate items in your apartment to clear some space or prepare for new additions. Then, you’ll want to clean each room one by one—this will allow you to focus your energy on one thing at a time, rather than moving disjointedly from task to task and creating more work for yourself.
With that being said, each room in your apartment will need its own checklist, as not all call for the same tasks. Here are some ideas to keep in mind while moving from room to room.
Kitchen
- Fridge clean-out. Although cleaning appliances can be the most grueling things to clean in the kitchen, it is one of the most important. Organize your fridge and throw out old food, drinks and expired condiments. Once you’ve tossed the items that are no longer needed, you should take the time to wipe down shelves and drawers to make your fridge extra shiny and clean.
- Reorganize cabinets and drawers. Spring is the perfect time to go through your cabinets and find the items that are broken, unused or simply no longer necessary to keep around. By doing this, you’ll be able to make a list of what you need to purchase for future use. This is especially important if you find yourself entertaining quite often. Don’t forget to clean out those drawers! We all have a junk drawer or two that need extra love when it comes to organizing.
- Lemon peels. Don’t toss those lemon peels just yet! For the times you don’t have an air freshener laying around your apartment, put a few lemon peels in your garbage disposal to release a crisp, citrus scent throughout your kitchen. Your kitchen will be smelling fresh and springtime ready!
Living Area
- Clean the windows. This is a great place to start in the area you probably spend most of your time in. With the weather getting nicer and the outside looking prettier, you’ll probably want to keep your blinds open more often than not. Before doing so, get rid of streaks on windows and dust on blinds, and provide a crystal-clear view for more sun to shine in your apartment.
- Vacuum the floors. Although this should be done quite often in anyone’s apartment, sometimes we can get a little lazy in the winter months. Vacuum your hardwood and carpet floors and get rid of any allergens that might be stuck. If you’re a pet owner, be sure not to skimp out on this task!
- Clean the screens. After a wintertime of streaming TV shows and movies, dust and finger prints can easily collect on your screens. Spray some glass cleaner and a towel and wipe away those prints. You’ll make your show and movie-watching much more vivid by completing this task.
Bedroom
- Switch clothes and shoes. Now that winter clothes and shoes are no longer needed, it’s time to switch out the cold and make room for the warm! Go through your closet and store away large sweaters and other bulky items that you won’t be wearing for a while. You can also store those boots and pretend winter never happened. This would also be a good time to make a donation pile for clothes you can’t see yourself ever wearing again.
- Rearrange your furniture. Sometimes you need something new but can’t figure out what exactly the ‘new’ needs to be. Instead of purchasing items for your bedroom that’ll liven up the place, try rearranging your bedroom furniture. This will trick your mind into thinking you’re in a completely new space! It’s easy to do and you don’t have to spend a dime!
- Wash your sheets. This simple task can make a huge difference in any bedroom. Sleeping on clean sheets could be the equivalent to sleeping on clouds. Exaggeration? Not at all. You’ll love the feeling of your soft, fresh sheets, and they’ll smell good too! Try getting into the habit of washing your sheets weekly this spring. You won’t regret it.
Bathroom
- Throw out unnecessary products. Bathroom products can build up over time in your apartment, especially the ones that are never used. Start by going through each product and deciding whether you’ll ever use it again. If not, throw it away. You should also go through and make sure items aren’t expired. You don’t want to be using products that can harm you, and they shouldn’t be sitting in your bathroom either!
- Clean grout and drains. No one said scrubbing your bathtub or shower would be a fun job, but its necessary. Make sure to grab some grout and drain cleaner during your next grocery store visit. When using these products, make sure to let them sit before washing them away. You’ll get maximum cleaning results by using this trick!
- Make a place for everything. Bathrooms can look cluttered with the daily items we use like toothbrushes, hair dryers, etc. In order to maintain an organized look and feel to this room, make a place for everything. Find some nice baskets at a local store and utilize closet and cabinet space for storage. Keep the counters clear and you’ll be feeling like a cleaning master!
When your apartment spring cleaning comes to an end, there’s only one more thing to do—crack a few windows and let the fresh air flow in. It’s now time to sit back, relax and enjoy the cleanliness of your Columbus apartment!

The man who put on 10,000 shows: Scott Stienecker looks back on 40 years of rock ‘n’ rolling with PromoWest
By Emily Bench – Staff reporter, Columbus Business First
Apr 18, 2019
It all started with a house party.
“I ran around with a lot of guys who were a couple of years older than us, and always went to all their parties,” said Scott Stienecker, a veteran concert promoter whose shows have wowed music fans in Columbus for decades. “And they were like, ‘You need to throw a party.’”
So the then 17-year-old from St. Marys in western Ohio rented the Tri-County Event Center on Memorial Day weekend in 1978, hired a Kiss-esque band and charged $3 at the door.
Stienecker made $1,080 that night and officially entered the rock and roll promotions business.
Over the next few decades, he built PromoWest Productions and saw it become the fifth-largest independent music production company in the United States, hosting hundreds of memorable shows at venues including the Newport, The Basement and Express Live.
But the years can do a number on people in the music business, both those on stage and behind it. And so last September, Stienecker cut a deal with Los Angeles-based AEG Presents, which acquired a majority stake in PromoWest for an undisclosed amount.
“You can’t escape the competition,” said Stienecker, who now is regional manager of the Midwest market for AEG Presents. “Every day, I have to fight for Columbus – I fight against Cleveland, I fight against Cincinnati in order to get acts.”
After 35 years, the fighting got to be too much.
“The main thing for me was age – I was 58,” he said. “If they’re going to (buy) me out in five years, I’ll be 63 and that’s a good time to retire. So it was kind of a matter of time.”
Now, Stienecker is working for ‘the man,’ just like many other once-independent music companies.
“These big dogs just keep picking off the smaller markets,” he said. “One at a time.”
A recent concert at the Newport Music Hall concert
The Newport Music Hall was the first venue owned by PromoWest Productions.

Rock ‘n’ roll all night
When Stienecker was 15, he saw Kiss perform at St. John Arena on the Ohio State University campus.
“It blew me away,” he said. “I remember I sat there thinking: ‘Who put this whole thing on?’”
After high school, Stienecker went to Bowling Green State University, where he studied business and marketing and joined the school’s concert committee. At the time, he wanted to be the next Jules Belkin, the Cleveland resident whose Belkin Productions put on shows at Richfield Coliseum, Blossom Music Center and other venues in the region. (The company has since become part of Live Nation.)
“He was God,” Stienecker said of Belkin. “I wanted to become that … but I didn’t know if it would be possible.”
He transferred to Ohio State his sophomore year and ultimately landed an internship with Bill Graham Presents out in California, which he said was a turning point for him. He learned from one of the most influential men in the business who ran mega-successful music halls in San Francisco and New York City.
Stienecker decided to stay in California, and was hired on as a secondary concert promoter for Parallax Productions. It was there that he heard in 1984 that Hank LoConti, who owned Agora clubs in Cleveland and Columbus, was looking to sell the High Street music hall and turn it into a Walgreens.
Stienecker returned to Ohio and pleaded with him.
“I said, ‘Hank, you can’t let this happen,’” he said. “And he said he would lease it to me if I could come up with $25,000.”
Instead, the 22-year-old raised $180,000 and bought the building, turning it into the Newport Music Hall.
The first show he booked as PromoWest was Neil Young, who played a sold-out show at the Newport on Sept. 9, 1984.
Booking big
It didn’t take long for PromoWest to grow. Stienecker built his brand by creating popular clubs including Polaris Amphitheater, The Basement and the A&R Music Bar, while selling out shows at Ohio Stadium and buying the Bunbury Music Festival in 2015.
“It took a while and there were growing pains,” he said. “We started as a one-man show of a little independent, and grew into almost 60 full-time employees and 750 shows a year.”
Perhaps Stienecker’s biggest contribution was building the first-of-its-kind indoor/outdoor venue LC Pavilion in 2001. (It’s now Express Live.)
Stienecker said that site flipped the model of a music venue on its head. Soon, people across the country began to call, asking him to take his concept to other cities. He turned them all down until a developer in Pittsburgh called. The two created Stage AE, the second indoor/outdoor music venue in the nation.
“We figured it out,” he said. “It was like a light bulb went off.”
Express Live up close and backstage
Scott Stienecker’s Express Live indoor/outdoor stage changed the way concerts could be promoted and shown. Other venues immediately began to copy PromoWest’s formula after the site opened in 2001.

Randy Malloy, general manager of local alt-rock radio station 102.5, said Stienecker is an innovator.
“Scott is someone that has really really taken concert promoting to the next level,” Malloy said. “He takes the risks on bands that aren’t there yet, who haven’t made a big, and once they do, they come back.
“They remember Columbus because of him.”
Malloy said a good example is the band Jungle, which had trouble selling 60 tickets to a show in Chicago in 2014.The next stop on the band’s tour was Columbus.
Stienecker threw everything he had at promoting the show.
When the Jungle played the Newport, 800 people were there to see them. The band, which has toured the world, returned to Columbus in 2018 for another show at the Newport.
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
In many ways, the evolution of the music business has been hard for Stienecker to accept.
“What I loved … the most was the old days, when rock and roll was just rock and roll,” he said. “I miss when it was raw and real and there were local promoters in every market.
“Now, it’s very corporate.”
Live Nation was founded in 1996, grew quickly and started taking bites out of smaller markets. The publicly traded company had $10.8 billion in revenue last year.
AEG Presents was founded five years later and also began to move into smaller, independent markets.
“Once Live Nation came, the whole industry changed,” Stienecker said. “People are more focused on the bottom line than they are developing the acts.”
It takes time and a local interest to do that. Stienecker created spaces where small and local artists could play, moving up to bigger venues as they grew. That’s what worked for Twenty One Pilots and O.A.R., he said.
“They can move up from The Basement, to A&R, to the Newport and then to Express Live,” he said.
“We take the acts and develop them from the ground up.”
