Happy Earth Day! Here’s How to Go Green as a Columbus Renter
Earth Day is a global celebration of our commitment to protect our planet. As a renter in Columbus, there are so many ways you can help take care of the earth.
Celebrate Earth Day 2021 and help better our environment by incorporating these green tips into your Columbus apartment.
Use Eco-Friendly Products
Every day, around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans—yes, even from our homes in the Midwest. Make a commitment to ditch the plastic and incorporate more reusable and recyclable products into your lifestyle.
Take a reusable shopping bag on your next visit to the Giant Eagle Market District, or improve your shopping experience with quick and easy curbside pickup. You can also eliminate plastic water bottle usage by getting a glass, stainless steel or aluminum water bottle for your next workout at Arena District Athletic Club or Club Pilates.
Reduce Your Energy Consumption
Homes and apartments make up a significant percentage of greenhouse gas emissions due to the energy we use. But there is ample opportunity to conserve energy and reduce your electricity usage by remembering to turn off lights and unplugging appliances you’re not using.
You can also avoid using your lights by opening your blinds and letting natural sunlight brighten your unit during the day. It also helps to live in a healthy, highly efficient and LEED-certified apartment community like Apartments at the Yard.
Support Sustainable Restaurants
The vast majority of us report wanting to be more sustainable in our daily lives, and a big part of that extends to eating at restaurants that actively feel the same way. Head into Brekkie Shack for breakfast in Grandview Yard and you’ll be able to choose from a variety of delicious, plant-based dishes paired with a cup of responsibly sourced coffee.
For dinner, visit Ted’s Montana Grill in the Arena District for a savory and eco-friendly meal, as the brand commits to making sustainable choices in their daily operations for the betterment of our planet.
Use Water Wisely
Did you know each of us uses an average of 82 gallons of water a day? There are several ways you can be mindful of water usage in your apartment—turning off the sink while you brush your teeth or shave can save 8-10 gallons of water per day, adding up to nearly 5,700 gallons per year. Additionally, turning the faucet off while washing dishes and running the dishwasher only when it’s full saves nearly 500 gallons annually.
Clean Up Columbus
You can do your part to help Keep Columbus Beautiful! In a socially distanced world, helping keep the city clean is an easy task to do on your own or with a couple friends. Head to a local park—or the streets of your community—with trash bags and gloves and pick up any litter you see. A green city starts with a clean city!

Celebrate Earth Day at these Environmentally Friendly Restaurants
Brekkie Shack – Sustainability initiatives at Brekkie Shack include composting, recycling and utilizing reusable materials that sum up to diverting 90% of its output away from the landfill. The composting company the restaurant uses, GoZero, said, “In 2020, Brekkie Shack composted a total of 10,993 pounds. That is equivalent to taking a car off the road for 500 days!”
Ted’s Montana Grill – The restaurant’s take-away containers are reusable and made from recycled material, and the cups and cutlery are made from corn starch and are 100% compostable. Swing by for authentic American cuisine to support the business’s efforts on Earth Day.
Grandview Yard/Apartments at the Yard is LEED-certified

In 2014, the U.S. Green Building Council awarded the Grandview Yard development pre-certification as a LEED Neighborhood Development Plan (LEED-ND), making it among the Midwest’s fist LEED-ND Silver neighborhoods.
Preservation, conservation, and innovation: The design and development decisions were less about construction, and more about neighborhood. Learn more in this video: Grandview Yard LEED Certification.
